Protection of Minors

Appalachian State University hosts a large number of minors who participate in a number of different activities including academic and athletic camps, special programs offered by various academic or administrative units, operated both on and off-campus. The protection of these youth is of utmost importance to the university.

As such, App State developed Policy 111.1, Protection of Minors, to promote the safety and wellbeing of minors trusted to the university’s care. Policy 111.1 outlines what is required of all university faculty, staff, students, vendors and visitors of App State who work with minors in university-sponsored programs or who participate in third party programs and activities that use App State property.

Protection of Minors policy also informs individuals of their reporting obligations in instances of suspected child abuse or neglect of minors Policy 111.2, Reporting Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect.

The Protection of Minors policy applies to all programs and activities in which the university is knowingly supervising minor participants or knowingly allowing third-party to use university property for the purpose of operating a program or activity primarily serving or including minors.

COMPLIANCE WITH Protection of Minors, POLICY 111.1

UNC System Office created policy 1300.10, Protection of Minors in 2019 and developed a committee to help all UNC System campuses develop their own policies. With this guidance, App State created Policy 111.1, Protection of Minors which was approved in June 2020.
